I added a "WORK" label onto the pocket and a one-liner to make it easy for everyone to understand the purpose. Pretty much all of the "stuff" that we get in the course of a day or comes from the office goes home in this pocket. Parents sort through and take it out daily or regularly. The purpose of the front pocket is to organize daily papers to take home.
These materials will make a big difference for my students since they will be learning from home. Students will need fun activities to work on some essential skills at the beginning of the school year especially those who were not able to attend preschool. It goes home with your student every night and comes back to school each morning. Each day their binders are placed in their mailbox. Add a profile photo in addition to your classroom photo.
I printed a class set of the month's calendars with a reading book log (to track at-home reading) on the back. I hole punched them and inserted them behind the mail sleeve. I printed a class set of the labels and simply stuck it on.

As soon as I get my student list, I send out these letters to the parents. I also let them know about the class schedule and some of our daily routines! Knowing this class information takes little time and lets the parents know more about me as a classroom teacher.

I also copied our weekly reading log on the back. In this way, I could be sure it was seen each week. As a parent, I know life gets busy… so I want to be sure the newsletter gets home in the student binder. I choose "poly" plastic folders to last all year long. They are the two pocket kind with fasteners. I think there are a few things you can do to make a daily folder setup successful and easy for kindergartners to use. That’s when I bit the bullet and went out to buy a class set of 1-inch, white binders with a clear cover. You can actually get them in sets of 2 from Staples, although the Staples brand binders aren’t nearly as sturdy as the Avery binders.

Trust me, you want to use Take Home Binders. My students took them home and brought them back each day. I did not collect them, the students simply put them in their desks. At the beginning of the year, I would do binder checks every few days to get them in the habit of cleaning them out. After that, I would just do a binder check once a week. A binder check was just, “put your binder on your desk so we can check that it is cleaned out.” Nothing fancy and it took just a minute or two to do.

After re-printing the entire binder for my whole class, replacing the page protectors, and almost crying from exhaustion and defeat, I had my first set of Take Home Binders.
